The Dionýz Ilkovič Prize is awarded by PosAm, a Slovak IT company which has been supporting education-related activities for a number of years. Nominations for the prize may be sent by anyone – students, their parents or peer teachers. Out of 54 application forms the jury has selected three finalists and will also choose the winner. The jury is chaired by a young Slovak scientist and the President of the International Tournament of Young Scientists, assistant professor Martin Plesch from the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Other jury members include recognized experts from Slovak and Czech universities. “I must admit that we were really pleasantly surprised by how many great personalities we learnt about thanks to the competition. We were only secretly hoping for such success. It was not easy at all to select finalists”, says Docent Plesch. Among other criteria the jury assesses e.g. achievements in extra-curricular activities, their extent or the innovative attitude of their organizer. The name of the winner is going to be announced during a ceremonious event held on November 8, 2017 in the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra building in Bratislava. The winner and the finalists are going to receive rewards amounting to EUR 6,000 in total.
Prize named after Professor Ilkovič
The prize has been named after a significant Slovak scientist. In 1934 Dionýz Ilkovič derived a relation between polarographic diffusion current, solvent concentration and the characteristics of a dropping mercury electrode, which is known as Ilkovič´s Equation today. At that time he was a member of Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský’s team. Professor Dionýz Ilkovič was not only an important globally recognized Slovak physicist and scientist but also a great teacher whose teaching style became legendary among his students and colleagues .
Award Organizers
The award was established by PosAm. “There are dozens of the most diverse prizes awarded in Slovakia but one important prize was still missing”, explains Marián Marek, CEO of PosAm, adding “Many teaching and non-teaching staff who spend their time with extra-curricular activities at elementary and secondary schools have devoted their lives to sharing their experience with young people, believing that they may become scientists and important personalities in the future. The Dionýz Ilkovič Prize was created to show gratitude and respect but also to encourage people working at schools in the area of natural sciences”
PosAm has long believed that the IT business should also have a wider social impact. The company currently supports selected student initiatives. Secondary-school students were also a focus of the “Don’t ignore it” project which aimed at improving students’ decision-making regarding their education choices. Promoting talents and personalities in the area of natural sciences is a part of PosAm´s mission.
